Delegating When Control Is The Issue

Ever come across a colleague who is super uncomfortable giving up control?

If you can honestly say “no” to this question, then you’ve either been working solo all your life, or you’ve been lucky enough to work with an amazing group of individuals who are each super self-aware and masters at empowering their team!!!

So, for the rest of us, here are a few thoughts.

In my opinion, delegating is easier said than done.  And while it may be based in science, it’s more of an art to actualize good delegation.

Delegating makes total sense.  To our rational brain.

It provides learning opportunities for individuals.

It frees up the delegator to do different work.

It is empowering to those who take on the new tasks.

But delegating is hard for our emotional brain.

Because it means we are giving up control.

We might not know everything that’s going on and that could make us anxious.

We don’t want to let our colleagues down.

Delegating can feel like we are saying “no” and shirking responsibility by passing the task on to another.  It takes faith and a strong belief in one’s team to delegate.

It also takes belief in oneself, that in order to grow as a leader, that in order to let your team members soar, delegation is an essential part of the recipe.  Your recipe.

Just my two cents on some of the pitfalls of delegation, that are, frankly, pretty much all in our head!
