One of my husband’s favorite and most used expressions is “let’s just keep it simple”. And it took me awhile to figure out what he really meant by this, and where he comes from when he says it.
See, I thought at first, that he just didn’t want to bother with things being not-simple
But there’s more to it than that.
That expression, for him, is one of the many ways he shows me how much he is thinking about me. How concerned he is to honor my time, my work, my choices. It’s actually a very thoughtful expression; “let’s keep it simple”.
And then there’s the whole issue of what the flip side of ‘keep it simple is”. The flip side is that it’s complicated. And with complicated often comes stress and anxiety and missed deadlines. It’s hard enough wading through the mountains of work we all have every day, so why invite complicated?
But I think the key reason he uses this expression so often, is because in fact, saying ” let’s keep it simple” is a reflection of how he chooses to be in the world. And I love that about him.
What’s an expression that you use often and that reflects how you choose to be in the world?
