Using Your Imagination

Worrying is using your imagination to create something you do not want!!!

I loved this quote the first time I saw it.

And then I started thinking about how I’d been a pretty good worrier all my life.  And yet I never thought of myself as particularly imaginative.  So it turned out that I have no lack of imagination, I’d just been using my imagination to create what I didn’t want, rather than what I did want.

Once I realized that , it became a simple act of choice as to what use I’d put that imagination of mine.  I find that if we are already are good at something (in this case, Imagining) it’s pretty easy to pivot and use it for another purpose.

Here are the basic steps I use to pivot:

·         I pause and notice what I’m imagining.

·          Then I ask myself ‘how is this imaginative worrying serving me right now?’

·         Then I say to myself- sometimes out loud- “ Wendy, it’s time to shift your imagination from what you are afraid might happen to what you DO want to happen”.

·          And then I allow myself a moment to get that new image in my mind.

Does it work each and every time?  No way.  But I’m working on it!

And life feels oh so much better when we choose to focus on and imagine what we do truly want.

Imagine what can happen when we do!!!
