Making the best of a rainy day

So often we can get stuck in a rut about what we believe to be true.  And that belief doesn’t much serve us well.

I think that long ago, I used to believe that when a rainy day appeared all my plans were ruined and I’d have a boring kind of a day.

But not so much these days.  Now I welcome the rain, even if it’s for an entire day or two. And I think that’s because I grew tired of observing myself making the worst of a rainy day, so I opted to pivot and make the very best out of one.

I started by remembering some distant memories from my early childhood when a rainy day would present itself, and what kinds of fun and adventure and inside activities we steered ourselves to.  Making forts out of sheets hung between the couch and the coffee table… re-reading a favorite book… playing board games… all kinds of creative choices I never really thought about doing when the sun was shining.

So as I invited myself to pivot from a ‘worst day’ mentality to a ‘best day’ one, I landed on some current day activities that could help the process.  And lo and behold, my list has some pretty interesting (for me anyway) activities including;  reading a new book on leadership coaching… doing a  five star Soduku to the end… making a surprise phone call to my Mom in Arizona…giving myself a pedicure…some dedicated meditation time….

So, next time you observe yourself stuck in a bit of a rut about that rainy day, try your own version of that pivoting approach.

Maybe you’ll end up discovering new found delight in that rainy day.

And who knows, there’s always the option of building a fort in the living room from an old sheet!
